Listen to Meryl Streep read from Brian Selznick's "Big Tree" as a giant sycamore receives warning from mycorrhizal fungi about approaching danger “I realized that with the way I draw and the pencil, because most of the most of my work, and the drawings in ‘Big Tree’ are all done with a pencil, I could use the fog, I could use mist as a way to both obscure the details of the forest, while evoking the mystery of the story." Selznick admits he has never liked drawing trees because they are so complicated. ![]() So the filmscript morphed into drawings and text for a book. But he'd fallen in love with the “Big Tree” story. Selznick says it became clear the movie wouldn't be made. And it's really, in many ways, how the trees of a forest survive and what makes them from individual trees into a community.“ “I learned about the mycorrhizal system, which some people may have heard about, which is the underground fungal system, which connects all the roots of the trees in a forest, passing along information. He consulted a paleobotanist who studies ancient plants and he hiked with park rangers through forests. He also found out about their key role in complex ecosystems, whether it's deep in the forest or on the side of a busy urban avenue. From a parent’s viewpoint, this is a time saver! You can set a schedule if you like, or just open their guide and ask them a question! Students love talking about what they are reading, whether they like it or not. The guide might suggest each learner read chapters 1 and 2, then answer some questions. ![]() As your student reads a novel, the guide provides a framework, something like a workbook. New to literature study guides? They are an independent and flexible option for adding a literature component to your language arts. Your student will use their own Bible in their preferred version. With Progeny Press, students are asked to draw comparisons between the literature they are reading and the Bible. Think of it as moving from who, what and where into the how and why’s. I like how their guides begin with more basic comprehension questions and evolve into more challenging questions that encourage deeper thinking. Among the many companies that offer a literature guide or study guide to use with a novel, Progeny Press does a beautiful job incorporating scripture into their literary analysis. ![]() ![]() ![]() In a moment of crisis, Ellis Abbey leaves her daughter, Viola, unattended-for just a few minutes. I seemed to retain only bits and pieces of the stories. This is a book of that I might have to read against to get the full gist of the stories. The book was hard to follow and very dry at time, but did have spots that were intriguing. At the end, one of the characters enters King Arthur’s court, but out side of that King Arthur only exist on the tongues of characters. Another story is about the Black Knight who fights against Arthur’s men until he is defeated. Another story was intwined with the magic of a witch for a King to gain a throne.
